Pythagoras helps UnLtd in their strategy to put digital and data at the heart of their delivery
UnLtd is a foundation dedicated to providing funding and support to social entrepreneurs. Using their experience, insight and innovation, UnLtd helps people who are passionate about tackling a problem in society to thrive and change the UK for the better.
Always seeking to find enterprising solutions and approaches to support their work, UnLtd has embarked on a strategy to put digital and data at the heart of everything they do. Dan Lockeretz, Head of CRM System comments:
‘This pivotal year is a perfect opportunity to re-evaluate how technology can best support the execution of our strategy, now and in the future.’
UnLtd is developing intelligent user journeys to connect entrepreneurs and sponsors with the most relevant information at all times. A large part of achieving this is to develop a platform which gives a single view of each contact across all touchpoints with the organisation. UnLtd will also pull together the wealth of knowledge from their sponsors and partners into an online community and Learning Area to enable their community to find the information they need when they need it.
Approach: Investing in Design and Discovery
UnLtd recognised the importance of having a good supplier relationship and wanted to make sure they had made the best decision about both their partner and their technology choice. For this reason, they initially procured a Design and Discovery Phase with Pythagoras, who they selected following a tender process.
Discovery provided UnLtd with an opportunity to get to know their team of consultants and project managers that would be involved in the full project, and for Pythagoras to provide accurate designs, costings and project plans based on the requirements teased out during workshops.
On completion of the Discovery phase, stakeholders and users at UnLtd were engaged with the project aims and excited to start the build of the solution. The team at UnLtd were confident that Pythagoras was the right partner for them, and both parties were able to start the first phase of build with a solid appreciation of the scale and best approach to the project.
“Pythagoras demonstrated at the earliest opportunity how Dynamics 365 would be able to deliver all our long-term technical requirements, and more. They really helped my project team visualise the potential change the system could deliver and helped generate excitement at the prospect of change. The Pythagoras team are proving highly knowledgeable, professional and importantly, really easy to work with.
With Discovery behind us, we have collectively turned what felt like a mammoth and rather unwieldy project, into one that now has manageable phases and realistic timescales and estimates.”

Technology: Why Microsoft Dynamics 365?
• Clicks, not code
UnLtd chose Microsoft Dynamics 365 as their preferred solution due to the amount that can be achieved using out-of-the-box functionality. Using a ‘clicks not code’ development ethos was a key requirement, as UnLtd wanted a platform which can be easily managed, supported and tweaked in-house without relying heavily on developers.
• Feature-rich platform for all departments
Once complete, Dynamics 365 will provide UnLtd with a flexible platform for account management and nurturing; email marketing, automation and personalisation; integration with existing events management solution; mentoring management; donation and grant management and surveys. Microsoft Portals will also be used to provide a new Award Application and Management space, and native integration will ensure data entered into the portal is updated on an individual’s contact record in Dynamics 365.
Partnership: Why Pythagoras?
• Long-term customer relationahips
Kirsty Moors, Not for Profit Sector Lead at Pythagoras comments:
‘UnLtd wanted to select a partner who could demonstrate that they had maintained long-term relationships with their customers beyond initial implementation. Pythagoras was able to show this by introducing the team at UnLtd to our customers in the NfP sector, some of whom we have worked with as their technology advisor since implementing Dynamics CRM v4 (six major versions before Dynamics 365).
We also connected the team with some of our consultants and project managers who had worked on these transformations so they could share their experiences and advice ahead of the project. We’re pleased that this gave UnLtd the confidence to move into their Design and Discovery phase, and then on to full project with Pythagoras.’
• Agile project approach
UnLtd is keen to engage users from across the organisation in the development of the platform. Adopting an Agile methodology allows us to work collaboratively with these users for decision making, testing and feedback whenever new functionality is being planned or built.
